In seven self-drive days this route links Faro's walled old town, the cliffs and beaches of Lagos, a licensed tour into the Benagil sea cave, Praia da Marinha and the Carvoeiro boardwalks, the fortress at Sagres and the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente, Silves Castle and the Lagoa wine country, and the quiet eastern Algarve at Tavira and the Ria Formosa.
Best time: May–June and September–October bring warm days without the peak crush; July–August is hottest and busiest, and even in high summer the Atlantic stays refreshingly cool.

7-Day Itinerary Breakdown
Day 1: Arrive in Faro & the walled old town
Fly into Faro (FAO), collect the rental car and spend the first night in Faro or continue to Lagos.
Arrive at Faro Airport & pick up your car
Faro (FAO) is the Algarve's airport. Collect the rental car on arrival, and note that the A22 motorway uses electronic-only tolls, so ask the rental desk about a toll transponder.
Faro old town & the Arco da Vila
Wander free through the Cidade Velha's cobbled lanes, walls and squares, entering through the neoclassical Arco da Vila gateway.
Faro Cathedral (Sé de Faro)
Visit the cathedral on the Largo da Sé and climb the medieval bell tower for a view over the old town and the Ria Formosa.
Day 2: Lagos — Ponta da Piedade & the golden beaches
Drive west to Lagos in the morning and use it as the base for the next few nights.

Explore the sculpted headland of golden sea stacks, arches and grottoes just south of Lagos. The clifftop paths, boardwalks and viewpoints are free; watch the edge and heed the erosion signs.
Praia Dona Ana & Praia do Camilo
Visit two of the Algarve's most photographed cliff-backed beaches, a short walk from Ponta da Piedade. Both are free with long stair descents; swim between the flags when lifeguards are on duty.
A dolphin-watching cruise from Lagos marina
Join a guided boat trip from Lagos marina into the Atlantic to look for common and bottlenose dolphins. Sightings are wild and never guaranteed, so choose a responsible operator.
Day 3: The Benagil cave & the Carvoeiro coast
Use Lagos as your base for a licensed cave tour, Praia da Marinha and the Carvoeiro cliff walks.

Enter the famous domed cave with its round skylight only on a licensed boat, kayak or SUP tour. Since 2024 the Maritime Authority has banned swimming or paddling in on your own; groups get a short, timed pass through the cave, and landing on the cave beach is not allowed. Tours leave from Benagil beach, Carvoeiro, Portimão and Lagos.
Praia da Marinha
Visit the free beach and clifftop viewpoint famed for its double rock arch, one of Portugal's most celebrated stretches of coast. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail runs from here along the clifftops toward Benagil and Carvoeiro.
Algar Seco & the Carvoeiro boardwalk
Follow the free clifftop boardwalk from Carvoeiro to the wave-carved rock formations, blowholes and grottoes of Algar Seco. Stay on the marked paths because the soft limestone edges are undercut.
Day 4: Sagres & Cabo de São Vicente — the end of the world
Take a day trip west from Lagos to the wild, windier Costa Vicentina corner.
Fortaleza de Sagres
Visit the ticketed clifftop fortress on the Sagres promontory, tied to the legend of Prince Henry the Navigator's school of navigation, and walk the walls and windswept headland loop above the Atlantic.
Cabo de São Vicente
Stand at the lighthouse-capped cape at mainland Europe's southwestern tip, a free and dramatic viewpoint over sheer cliffs and open ocean that is superb at sunset. Hold onto hats because the wind is serious.
Day 5: Silves Castle & the Lagoa wine country
Use Lagos as the base for the old Moorish capital and a scheduled wine-country visit.

Explore the ticketed red-sandstone castle above Silves, once the Moorish capital of the Algarve, then drop into the lanes and the Gothic cathedral of the old town below.
A winery tour & tasting in the Lagoa wine country
Join a guided cellar tour and tasting at one of the wine estates around Lagoa, Estômbar and Porches in the Algarve's historic Lagoa wine region. Book ahead because visits are by scheduled tour.
Day 6: East to Tavira & the Ria Formosa lagoon
Leave the western Algarve and sleep in Tavira for the final night.
Drive east to Tavira
Cross the region on the A22 or the slower N125. Check out of Lagos in the morning, allow time for the toll road, and confirm drive times and tolls with your rental company.

Stroll free through the eastern Algarve's prettiest town: the seven-arched old "Roman" bridge over the Gilão, tiled townhouses, the camera obscura hill and the castle garden.
A Ria Formosa lagoon boat trip
Take a guided boat trip into the Ria Formosa Natural Park's maze of channels, salt pans, shellfish beds and barrier islands, a haven for flamingos and wading birds. Tours run from Tavira, Olhão and Faro.
Day 7: Praia do Barril's anchor cemetery & departure
Spend a final morning near Tavira, then drop the car at Faro Airport and fly home.

Spend a last free morning on Tavira Island's Praia do Barril. Walk or ride the little beach train across the lagoon to the dunes where hundreds of rusted tuna-fishing anchors lie half-buried in memory of the old tuna fleet.
Drive to Faro Airport & fly home
Return to Faro (FAO), hand back the rental car, settle any electronic tolls with the rental company and fly out.

Can you swim into the Benagil cave?

Are Algarve beaches safe for swimming?
Generally yes in season. Swim between the flags where lifeguards operate and mind the green/yellow/red flag system; keep clear of the base of cliffs, which are marked with rockfall warning signs, and expect stronger surf on the west coast.
Is this itinerary different from a Lisbon trip?
Completely. This route never leaves the Algarve, Portugal's southern coast, about three hours south of Lisbon; combine the two only if you have well over a week.
