Climb the Acropolis

Theater of Epidaurus

Detour to the best-preserved theater of the ancient world. Drop a coin on the orchestra circle and hear it ring from the upper tiers — acousticians still study how the 4th-century-BC design carries sound.

Nafplio & Palamidi Fortress

Arrive in Nafplio, often called Greece's most romantic town. Conquer the Palamidi Fortress (drive to the back gate to avoid the steps, or hike up for the challenge), then stroll the Arvanitia promenade toward the Bourtzi sea castle views at dusk.

Sparta (Quick Stop)

Modern Sparta is quiet, but you can snap a photo with the statue of Leonidas before heading to the real highlight nearby: Mystras.

Explore Mystras

Explore the UNESCO site of Mystras, a fortified Byzantine ghost town cascading down a mountain. Visit the Palace of the Despots and ancient churches.

Arrival in Monemvasia

Drive to the coast to find 'The Rock.' Park outside and walk across the causeway into the medieval castle town where no cars are allowed.

Gytheio Coffee Stop

Depart Monemvasia and stop in Gytheio, a colorful port town with octopus drying in the sun. Perfect for a mid-morning coffee.

Arcadian Mountain Drive

Cross the spine of the Peloponnese via Megalopoli. Break the drive at a roadside taverna — grilled village sausage and horta are the move here. No monuments today; just Greece out the window.

Evening in Olympia Village

Check in and relax in the modern village of Olympia. You're sleeping 400 meters from the ancient stadium so you can walk in at opening time tomorrow, fresh — while the tour buses are still on the highway.

Ancient Olympia at Opening

Walk into the birthplace of the Olympic Games as the gates open. Stand on the original starting line in the stadium and see the Temple of Zeus in soft morning light, before the coach crowds arrive.

Rio–Antirrio Bridge & Nafpaktos Lunch

Drive north and cross the Gulf of Corinth on one of the world's longest cable-stayed bridges (toll ≈€14). Ten minutes beyond, Nafpaktos hides a pocket-sized Venetian harbor that is made for a long lunch.

Evening in Delphi or Arachova

Climb the Parnassus foothills to Delphi village. Check in, then take in the valley-to-sea view over the Pleistos gorge at dinner — or drive 10 minutes up to stone-built Arachova for a livelier evening.

Sanctuary of Apollo & Museum

Walk the Sacred Way past the treasuries to the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle spoke for a thousand years, then continue up to the theater and stadium. Finish in the museum with the bronze Charioteer. One €20 ticket covers site and museum (2026).

Mountain Drive to Kalambaka

Descend from Parnassus and cross the Thessalian plain to Kalambaka (≈3 hrs). The gray towers of Meteora appear on the horizon long before you arrive — pull over for that first photo.

Sunset at Psaropetra

Head straight up to the main observation deck (Psaropetra) to watch the sun dip behind the Pindos Mountains, casting the rocks in golden light. Tomorrow you have a full day up here.

Great Meteoron Monastery

Start with the oldest and largest of the six monasteries, founded in the 14th century — doors open at 09:30 and close at 15:00, so it comes first. Its museum, frescoed katholikon, and the old ascent tower show how monks once hauled everything up by rope and net.

Varlaam Monastery

Just across the ravine, Varlaam sits atop a massive sandstone pillar. With a full day you're inside well before the 16:00 close instead of racing the clock. (Dress code: shoulders and knees covered).

Holy Trinity Monastery

Finish with the most dramatic perch of all — Holy Trinity, featured in James Bond's 'For Your Eyes Only'. Prepare for the 140-step carved stairway and be through the door before the 16:00 close; the view over Kalambaka is the reward.

Return Drive to Athens

Depart Kalambaka for the drive back to Athens (approx 4 hrs). It's mostly highway, making for an easy cruise.

Flight to Heraklion

Return your car at Athens Airport. Hop on a short 50-minute flight to Heraklion, the capital of Crete.

Welcome to Crete

Check into your Heraklion hotel near Lion Square. Celebrate your arrival with raki and Cretan dakos at 'Peskesi' restaurant.

Knossos Palace at Opening

Walk the labyrinth of Europe's oldest city — the Minoan palace of King Minos, 4,000 years old. Arrive at opening to see the red-columned North Portico and the charging bull fresco before the cruise crowds and the heat. Tickets are €20 flat in 2026 (the combined museum ticket has been discontinued).

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

See what was actually found at Knossos: the originals of the frescoes, the Phaistos Disc, and the snake goddess figurines. It's one of Europe's great museums and needs a separate ticket from the palace.

Koules Fortress & Market

Walk the Venetian harbor wall to Koules Fortress. Grab a bougatsa (custard pie) at the famous Lions Square fountain.

Day Trip to Matala

Drive south to Matala Beach. Explore the man-made caves in the sandstone cliffs that were inhabited by hippies in the 60s (Joni Mitchell stayed here!). Swim, then lunch at a beach taverna.

Sunset at Ammoudara

Return north and catch the sunset at Ammoudara beach before heading back into Heraklion for dinner.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge Waterfall

Drive west towards Rethymno. Detour slightly to see the Kourtaliotiko Gorge; you can hike down to where the river flows under an arched bridge.

Rethymno Old Town Lunch

Stop in Rethymno, Crete's best-preserved Venetian-Ottoman old town. Eat by the tiny circular harbor, then wander lanes of wooden balconies and minarets before the last leg west.

Chania Venetian Harbor Evening

Arrive in Chania, the jewel of Crete, and check into the pedestrian-only Old Town. Walk to the Egyptian Lighthouse at the harbor entrance and enjoy fresh seafood at a waterfront taverna like 'Salis'.

Balos Lagoon

Visit the world-famous Balos Lagoon with a whole day to enjoy it. The full-day cruise from Kissamos also calls at Gramvousa's pirate castle and docks back around 17:50. Driving instead? The last stretch is rough dirt road (often excluded from rental insurance), but you can leave whenever you like.

Falasarna Sunset

Falasarna Beach is a 20-minute drive from Kissamos port — perfectly timed for the early-summer sunset (≈20:30) on your way back to Chania. It offers one of the best sunsets on the island.

Elafonisi Pink Sand

Head south to Elafonisi beach, famous for its pink sand. With a full morning you can wade across the lagoon to the islet's quiet far coves before the day-trip buses arrive from the north.

Kedrodasos Cedar Forest Walk

For a wilder experience, follow the coastal path 30–40 minutes east to Kedrodasos, a white-sand cove shaded by twisted junipers (or drive around to its own small parking area) — the locals' answer to Elafonisi's crowds.

Farewell Stroll in Chania Old Town

Back in Chania, wander the maze of Venetian alleys one last time — leather lane, the covered market, and a slow final dinner in a courtyard taverna.

Harbor Coffee & Checkout

One last freddo espresso on the Venetian harbor before checkout — no pre-dawn alarm needed on this version of the trip.

Coastal Drive & Souvenirs

Cruise the 2-hour national road back to Heraklion. If time permits before your flight, grab some Cretan honey or olive oil near the airport to take home.

Depart Heraklion
